The idea of web services is taking the technology industry by storm, due in large part to vigorous support from software giants such as IBM, Sun Microsystems, and Microsoft. It is central to Microsoft s .NET strategy, as well as those of IBM, Sun, and numerous other companies. Since web services appear destined to succeed, we discuss building and using web services in the J2EE environment in this section. As XML messaging technologies such as SOAP have gained momentum, moving distributed application architectures away from tightly coupled technologies such as CORBA and RMI has become possible. The web services architecture is a loosely coupled, service-oriented environment in which applications expose functionality to one another over the Web. This type of architecture maximizes the flexibility and interoperability of distributed applications. Because it is based on open standards such as XML and HTTP, it is completely vendor- and implementation-independent. A web service created using C++ and Microsoft s .NET development tools can be consumed by a Java component running in a J2EE container. And once these services become pervasive, new types of applications that aggregate a set of services into completely integrated, inter-enterprise distributed systems will be possible.

The intention is to use the SQL Server Audit feature in SQL Server 2008 to replace the use of SQL Trace for this auditing . We first need to decide where the audit records will be sent . In line with the way trace files were used previously, a decision was made to again use log files rather than sending audit records to the Windows Event logs . Creating a folder C:\temp\HR_Audit (if necessary) and executing the following query will create the required server audit:

In this command, we have created a server audit called InsideTSQL_HR_Audit; determined that audit records will be sent to a file; and provided the location of the file(s), their maximum size, and maximum number of rollover files . Note that the FILEPATH needs to be the path to a folder, not a file . We have specified zero for the QUEUE_DELAY, which will cause writes to be done synchronously, and we have opted to have SQL Server shut down if writing to the audit is not possible . This could happen if we run out of disk space . By default, objects such as server audits are created in a disabled state . This allows the auditing system to be fully configured before it begins auditing . We can deal with the login/logout requirement by creating a server audit specification, as in the following command:

A web service is some set of functionality made available to remote applications and services via the Internet. A web service is described in XML, using the Web Services Definition Language (WSDL). As shown later in this section, a WSDL description contains details about what the service is, where to find it on the Web, and how to interact with it. Once created, this description is registered in a well-known location. Figure 4.13 depicts a sample web service. There are currently two popular, competing standards in the web services registry space, the ebXML Registry and Repository and Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI). Of these, UDDI is more general-purpose and is rapidly gaining the support of a majority of the industry.

We are logging all login attempts, both successful and failed, and all logouts . Next, we need to audit access to the HR schema . We audit the schema rather than all objects in the schema by executing the following command:

We have audited all actions that we previously discovered were individually auditable, except for REFERENCES permission . This permission isn t related to a modification or change to the objects in that schema but to objects that reference objects in the schema . For example, this might apply to a sales order raised by an employee . Creating a new sales order would cause a REFERENCES access to the HR .Employees table if there is a foreign key reference between them . In our hypothetical scenario, we have decided that we do not need to audit that situation as the list of employee identifiers is not privileged information; only the information held in the tables is privileged . Next, we enable our audit entries by executing the following query:
