The various solutions that are currently employed for delivering Carrier Ethernet each originated for a different purpose; for example, SONET/SDH was devised to deliver mission-critical voice services efficiently over a fiber infrastructure while also providing an unprecedented level of network resiliency, whereas WiMax was developed primarily to enable wireless broadband access over a reasonably large metro area As noted in Part II, each solution has its own history, and in many cases, was only recently enhanced to support Carrier Ethernet Naturally, some are more optimal than others, but a combination of factors such as the types of services supported (both Ethernet and non-Ethernet), depreciation of the solution infrastructure, and competitive issues, makes each of them commercially tenable It needs to be reiterated that most of these solutions were conceived for delivering commercial services other than Ethernet and, in fact, primarily continue to serve that purpose Thus, while assessing any of these Ethernet solutions, one must consider its primary functionality and its relevance in this broader context

Microsoft Expression family The Microsoft Expression family of products introduces tools aimed not at the developer, but at the supporting roles around the developer, including graphic designers, designer-developers, and human factors engineers. The assumption is that an entire team is now involved in the building of applications, of which the classic developer is a part. The two primary tools are:

Different (OSI Layer) Functions The Carrier Ethernet solutions discussed provide functionality that can be categorized across Layer 1, 2, and/or 3 of the OSI model (the physical, link, and/or network layer, respectively) As such, they either merely serve as a transport mechanism for delivering Carrier Ethernet services (basically enabling point-to-point E-Line services) or also, provide switching and routing functionality that will allow them to provide multipoint E-LAN services Figure 162 illustrates the OSI defined functionality that is provided by the different solutions Carrier Ethernet attributes may inherently be present in the base solutions, either partially or fully; for example, reliability is an attribute that is inevitably present in all SONET/MSPP solutions (even pre-Carrier Ethernet) Likewise, an MPLS solution inherently offers QoS and can scale as required of Carrier Ethernet solutions Most of these solutions are, in fact, feasible because they possess some of the attributes dictated by Carrier Ethernet and can carry Ethernet frames, albeit some more efficiently than others Some of these solutions, in their attempt to be relevant in the long-term, are also being actively augmented with additional (Carrier Ethernet) attributes for optimizing Ethernet delivery

Expression Blend The primary tool for designers and human factors engineers to participate in the development workflow. Blend is also unique in among the Expression line because it s written with WPF. Any resemblance to Adobe Flash is not coincidental. Blend is definitely in the Flash space and, with Silverlight, may prove to be a significant challenger. Although Adobe Flash and its new framework, Flex, work toward providing a web-application development platform, Microsoft is combining a significantly more mature and complete backend to WPF to create a compelling answer to Flash/Flex. Figure 3.10 shows the Expression Blend designer. Expression Design The basis of Microsoft s vector and graphics editing tools for WPF. Expression Design started life as Creature House Expression, a vector graphics editor. In 2003, Microsoft acquired the product, company, and developers.
